New Princeton Facilities (PRISM) Inaugurated

Princeton PRISM shared facilities include five Angstrom Engineering PVD systems supporting interdisciplinary materials research.

Princeton University inaugurated shared facilities within the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials (PRISM), bringing fabrication, materials characterization and interdisciplinary engineering research together. The original feature was dated February 16, 2017 and was preserved on the former Chinese site.

PRISM supports research across materials, nanostructures, photonics, quantum systems and bio–nano interactions. Its shared infrastructure lets researchers from different departments move from material synthesis to device fabrication and characterization within a coordinated facility.

The facility included five Angstrom Engineering PVD systems covering sputter coating, electron-beam evaporation and thermal deposition. Rather than assigning each tool to one narrow material, the collection provides flexible capability for metals, dielectrics and multilayer research.

The relationship between Princeton and Angstrom Engineering extends over many years and includes upgrades to earlier systems. This matters in a shared laboratory: maintaining service continuity and modernizing control or process capability can preserve the value of installed equipment.

Tony Novembre, then the PRISM micro/nanofabrication laboratory director, emphasized the practical value of responsive service and systems that simplify complex PVD workflows for a broad user community.
